The best view of Mysore is at the Sri Chamundeswari Temple situated on the summit of the Chamundi Hill, 800 feet above sea level. The base of the temple dates back to the 12th century and the 40 meter high gateway tower entrance also known as a gopuram was built sometime in the 1800’s. One can reach the temple by either climbing the 1,000 plus steps or a taxi can also be hired. For those taking the more adventurous route of climbing the steps, you will get to see some picturesque views of Mysore and will also have the opportunity to see the famous 5 meter high Nandi statue (Shiva’s holy bull), which was carved out of solid stone in 1659. The statue is one of the largest in India and is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year, especially on Tuesdays and Fridays which are considered to be the most auspicious days. In the parking lot you will find a statue of the demon Mahishasura, who was killed by the goddess Chamundi. Near the parking lot you will also find the Godly Museum, where paintings illustrate the various stages of spiritual life.
