Mysore Events & Festivals
-
Mysore celebrates with a very unique style and approach, with events held in order to give thanks to various tools that have helped aid the city over the years. A large example of this is presented during Dusherra, the largest festival in Mysore, celebrated in late October or early November. The Dusherra festival is highly decorative, with houses covered in streamers, gifts being exchanged, and millions of twinkling lights set up throughout the city. The festivities last 10 days, and the city is alive with sounds of music, and activities including dances and cultural performances. Ayudha Puja is an addition to Dussera, based around the worship of all vehicles – and marking this event is the stunning display and parade of an elephant dressed finely in golden ankle bracelets, bells and chains. The celebration ends with a big bang, consisting of a torch lit parade and fireworks. In March or early April comes the bright festivity of Yugadi, which is recognized as the Kannadiga New Year. Representing its pathway to this traditional start to the new year is the extremely popular Rathotsava, otherwise known as the Car Festival during March and April. During the festival, the main deity is carried around and flaunted for everyone to witness upon a wooden chariot. Following this procession, the Theppotsava (also known as the Float Festival) takes place at night.
