The Forgotten Princes : Portraits of Tipu Sultan’s Sons at Daria Daulat Bagh

Within the serene gardens of Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace in Srirangapatna, history is preserved in gilded walls and frescoed ceilings, but also in a lesser-noticed series of portraits that quietly command attention.

These paintings depict the seven documented sons of Tipu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore. The figures who stood at the intersection of royal privilege and historical upheaval.

While Tipu Sultan’s resistance against British colonial forces is widely chronicled, the lives of his children remain largely confined to footnotes of history.

The portraits, preserved inside the Daria Daulat Bagh palace, represent the following princes, listed in order from the first-born to the youngest:

Fateh Haider - Eldest son of Tipu Sultan

Each portrait invites contemplation…

  • Who were these princes beyond their royal lineage?
  • What futures awaited them after the fall of Mysore in 1799?
  • And how many more children of Tipu Sultan may have existed beyond the seven acknowledged by historians?
Historical records suggest that Tipu Sultan may have had more children whose names and lives were never formally documented, raising compelling questions about memory, power, and the selective nature of recorded history.

During my visit to Tippu Sultan Summer Palace (Daria Daulat Bagh), Srirangapatna, I photographed these portraits, drawn by their solemn expressions and understated presence.

Seen together, they transform the palace from a mere tourist attraction into a deeply personal archive of Mysore’s royal past.

Some monuments celebrate kings.

Others preserve the silence of history that has been left behind.
